I did my fist motion capture assignment using Actionscipt. I made the program where the hand gesture over certain part of the screen would activate a button. I see stuff like this in magazine and on TV but here I am a designer messing with the code and making something of my own. I realized that when it comes to coding you have to define everything from parameter to conditions. This is a massive time eater as you have sit there and figure out the boundaries of everything that is possible with the program realm. But once the parameter the foundation has been established building on it very exciting.
However what the movies don’t tell you is the motion capture is not a accurate as it seems. If you are moving your face and your hand it can confuse the program and cause your cursor to jump all over the place. Second things pointed our by my teacher Andrew Smyk is that hand gesture is the movie is so involved but in real life you would get tired very quickly, but good way to get fit. I think the technology is very interesting it is bring us closer to an input device free world, a world of full interactivity. My vision of motion capture is best portrayed in the movie Minority Report in which Tom Cruise walk into a shopping mall, and the camera in front of the store scan and adjust the store front advertisement based on person. Cool, huh.
