Mobile Tilt Tech

As technology moves toward more interactive modules; touch, visual and tilt will become more essential part of programming. I used Penguin a module created by Dan Zen, to play with tilt technology. The action script translates the tilt accelerometer used in iPhone into action script. You can find penguin here

Here is another example of an application using tilt.

ActionScript Sound Animation

Synchronize graphics to sound wave was an interesting project, as it is something that is not very common in the development of flash graphics. However as simple as the program code is the result are very impactful and can create really terrific results. Even though woodpecker was a relative straight forward program, I had a mix up with the naming convention. A turn out that myalls is the holder that holds individual ball which are called beats. Initially I thought that holder was initial beat and tried adding multiple session of robin which resulted in having beats being created which were syncronzied to one melody. This was solved by targeting the beats and having it act as an equalizer, this allowed for every beat to behave a little unique.

AS3 Multi-Touch

Working with multi-touch assignment has been an experience in going beyond the traditional media on using the mouse. When more and more emphasis is switching from single user experience to social gather having multi-touch aspect certainly has important aspect that the user can utilize to create more human interaction.

Here are some example of forward looking technology that utilize multi-touch.

Multi-Touch Project

I did my first multi-touch project and it was very exciting, know the stuff that I do look at technology conference is something that I can build myself. I think personally that as technology progresses through the years it will become more and more of an input free environment utilizing touch. Since human beings have two hands naturally multi-touch will become more and more prominent among technology development. I think despite the technology being there way before Dan Zen’s Goose application, the personal computer has not adapted much to this type of technology. We still have a single mouse and allowing maybe a touchpad with multiple pointers will really accelerate growth in this segments.

Being new to action script when building Goose based application can be somewhat overwhelming but with the helpful comments of Dan you can get the hang of the ropes. As projects in IMM are pilling up time is becoming more and more of luxury and though I would have liked to spent more time to toughly understand the technology y I have understood the basic to play around. To my surprise technology can be fun both in building and playing with.

Motion Capture

I did my fist motion capture assignment using Actionscipt. I made the program where the hand gesture over certain part of the screen would activate a button. I see stuff like this in magazine and on TV but here I am a designer messing with the code and making something of my own. I realized that when it comes to coding you have to define everything from parameter to conditions. This is a massive time eater as you have sit there and figure out the boundaries of everything that is possible with the program realm. But once the parameter the foundation has been established building on it very exciting.

However what the movies don’t tell you is the motion capture is not a accurate as it seems. If you are moving your face and your hand it can confuse the program and cause your cursor to jump all over the place. Second things pointed our by my teacher Andrew Smyk is that hand gesture is the movie is so involved but in real life you would get tired very quickly, but good way to get fit. I think the technology is very interesting it is bring us closer to an input device free world, a world of full interactivity. My vision of motion capture is best portrayed in the movie Minority Report in which Tom Cruise walk into a shopping mall, and the camera in front of the store scan and adjust the store front advertisement based on person. Cool, huh.

We started today our interactive multimedia program (IMM) at Sheridan and the first thing surprising is that interaction actually can involve more than two people. Rather than what I thought it being a 1 on 1 meeting between users and interface it turns can involves interface to multiple user. Interactive multimedia rather than being a direct line to the user is more like a web going back and forth between many connections.
